Stab accused found dead in prison

A Birmingham man accused of fatally stabbing a Nigerian in London's East End was found dead in his prison cell, it was confirmed today.

A Birmingham man accused of fatally stabbing a Nigerian in London's East End was found dead in his prison cell, it was confirmed today.

The Prison Service said Godfrey Moyo, 25, of Handsworth, had been removed from his shared cell at HMP Belmarsh, south London, early on Monday and taken to an intensive care facility.

Staff found Moyo had stopped breathing and he was pronounced dead on arrival at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in Woolwich, at around 5.40am.

Moyo had been on remand and awaiting trial at the Old Bailey after he pleaded not guilty to the murder of Fifi Mwenya in June last year.

Mr Mwenya, 28, was attacked by two men outside the Dartmouth Arms pub in Bidder Street, Canning Town, and later died.

A Prison Service spokeswoman said today: "Mr Moyo's behaviour in his shared cell early Monday morning led to his removal by trained staff to an intensive care cell in healthcare, where he was treated.

"He was subsequently found to be not breathing. CPR was administered immediately by staff and emergency services were summoned."

The Prison Service could not confirm the cause of his death, but it is not believed he had hanged himself.

A spokeswoman said an investigation had been launched by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.
